Joan Didion
Author Joan Didion in her New York City apartment with a portrait of her daughter Qunitanna , her only child, who died a few days after this photo was taken. Didion had just written a best-selling memoir " The Year of Magical Thinking", based on her personal experiences dealing with grief following the sudden death of her husband, author John Gregory Dunne, the previous year. Qunitanna was in a coma at the time of Dunn's death, and had to be told of his death by Didion when she awoke.
